How low-slope roofs fail in wind
A flat roof does not shed wind the way a pitched roof does; the wind travels across it and, at the windward edge and corners, creates the strongest suction anywhere on the building. Damage begins where the membrane meets the edge metal or the parapet: a fascia lifts, the membrane behind it peels, and the roof unzips across the field with the insulation boards coming with it. Water follows a different route on a low-slope roof. A drainage plan — clear drains, functioning overflow scuppers, positive slope from tapered insulation — is as much a part of wind preparation as the fastening pattern.

The right choice depends on the building’s use, slope, structure and budget more than on the weather; the weather decides how the chosen system is attached and finished at the edge.
Attachment, the edge and the paperwork
Every reputable single-ply manufacturer publishes attachment tables — fastener and plate spacing in the field, perimeter and corner zones — for the design wind pressures a roof must resist, and the perimeter and corner rows are denser for the reason described above.
